Finally watched Hacksaw Ridge and I definitely recommend it. I wasn't quite sure what to expect (all I knew was that it's a WWII movie and that it has good ratings) and was pleasantly surprised. Based on a true story, it's about the first conscientious objectors to have won the Medal of Honor without firing a shot. Movie portrays his courage and heroics really well, so despite all the brutal scenes and all the killing, it's a heartwarming movie. Mel Gibson did a really good job (eventhough he's an asshole himself).

Agreed.  Some of the action scenes in this movie were some of the best i have seen in any movie.

Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle. ****

Went into this expecting the worse but was pleasantly surprised. Plenty of humor and action.  Even has a nice recognition of Mr. Williams character.

Downsizing. **

Strange movie about people shrinking themselves.  Has a very long, too long really, run time and doesn’t really do anything. The shrinking stuff wasn’t needed and became a wasted premise.

The Greatest Showman. *

I was forced to watch this thing against my will. It’s the typical musical full of signing and dancing. Circus Freaks that don’t do anything freaky, instead they whine about their feelings. I don’t think folks were that sappy in the 1800s.

Agree with @pete_95973 on Sully, Hacksaw Ridge and The Accountant. We'd be good movie buddies!

Just saw Downsizing. Interesting movie that could have gone a lot of different ways and it has a very interesting premise. I didn't really care for the ending and it was abrupt. 6/10.

Saw All The Money In The World on december 31st. 7.5/10

It's that movie that had to be reshot at the last second to remove any trace of Kevin Spacey in it. Christopher Plummer took his spot and all his scenes were reshot just a couple month before release (impressive feat by the way).

It was pretty good considering all the backstage drama. It's the story of J. Paul Getty, founder of the Getty Institution and wealthiest man in the world in the 70s. His grandson is kidnapped and he doesn't want to pay the ransom (nice guy :D)

Very good acting from Michelle Williams in the lead role (the mom) and from Plummer as the old rich man :)

I’ve actually just watched Baby Driver this weekend. Kevin Spaceys last film role turned out to be a nice metaphor for his career.

Possibly the most fitting end for him.

Saw Molly's game.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt4209788/

I enjoyed this.  I would not call it a poker movie so much as a story with poker as the backdrop,  but as a poker player who has played more poker in casinos and cardrooms than 99% of the human population I thought it was quite good and realistic.  Usually when movies are made about poker or have poker as the backdrop there are 50 technical errors that could be corrected if they just had the average casino regular consulting the director.  But this movie got the poker stuff right for the most part.

Aside from the poker this movie could be enjoyed by people who don't understand or even enjoy poker.  A fascinating story about an industrious woman who made it big in the underground gambling industry in the United States.  Good actors and great directorial debut from Aaron Sorkin.

7/10

My Friend Dahmer ***** Excellent movie about notorious American Serial Killer, Jeffery Dahmer. Set in his last years of High School in the late 1970s. A tortured young man, dealing with shitty parenting, mental illness, etc. Does a great job of making one feel slight empathy for a man that eventually murdered 17 people. I have always been fascinated by these killers and Dahmer was one of the worst.

Now that my Kodi is back...cannot wait to watch this!! I'm all about the serial killer genre.

It's strange but in a good way. Love seeing these Disney actors move away from their kiddie roles.

Another one is taking his turn in a film about Ted Bundy.

The Florida Project

UVsaF2H.jpg

Positives

1. At times I could not tell if I was watching a documentary or a film, probably helped that I knew very, very little about the film going into it.

2. The acting was superb. Particularly the mother, the director found her on Instagram, she is awesome. A character so fucking flawed that you want bad things to happen to her until you don't because you know she loves her daughter but damn, if she doesn't test your patience, as I found myself saying, "come on, do the right thing".

3. The children.....I wanted to kill them and love them. But mostly love them as the adults around them have failed them, but then again, those same adults at some point were also failed as children. The girl playing the main character, Moonee, she was amazing in every scene. She broke my heart in the final act with her performance, outstanding. This little girl's performance is so honest that at times, I was convinced I was watching a documentary.

4. Willem Defoe is a national treasure. He plays the role of motel manager with so much heart. He needs his rent money but also cares about his tenants, especially the kids. He is such a good dude that I was asking, "why are you there?" the tenants seem stuck there but just felt as if he could just take off, live another life, but refuses to.There are hints to his story but it never becomes a distraction.

5. Loved the cinematography and the locations----as you can taste Disney all around you but still feels as if you are miles and miles away from the magic.

6. There seems to be some unnecessary establishing shots late in the film and they had me saying, "i get this is an art house film but did we really need 30 seconds of watching that?" But then the purpose of those shots is revealed and they are rewarding when you put them together. You think you are watching scenes used just to fill running time but they are really telling you the story, you just don't know it at the time.

7. Film schools and social workers can probably spend hours talking about the thematic elements of this film.

8. The anticipation of waiting for something bad to happen to either the children or one of the adults is one of the things that had me glued to the screen.

9. I have hung out in places like the motels in this film. I have always found myself in the outskirts of tourist locales and what is portrayed on film, i thought was very accurate.

10. The tension of all the dangers around the children really kept me on edge. Anticipating tragedy was a character unto itself for me.

11. The ending. I know some people didn't like it but I loved it. It had my heart pounding and my mind processing everything all at once.

Negatives

1. If you go to the movies to see action and explosions and aren't into character study films, then skip this one or you might ask yourself at the end, what was the point?

2. Being an art house film, it slows down in some places but it's never for too long and usually something cool happens afterwards, but some people don't appreciate the slowdown. A few times I just wanted to see what happened next. lol

3. Some of the scenes of Moonee and her Hailey sharing special mother-daughter moments seemed a bit of paste jobs which was a shame as I was already convinced that Hailey loved her daughter and was always trying to protect her non-existent innocence.

4. Will make people hate people like Hailey IRL, a young rebellious mother with a poor attitude, who never grew up and now is raising a child. Which is a shame because  we can see how Moonee would become her mother in the future. It's just a vicious cycle, unless you find someone that cares for you.

fSyW47h.jpg

Verdict: 4/5.... A fantastic look into the life of a not-so-innocent 6-year old living so close to magic but yet so very, very far away. If you like character study films involving children, don't miss this one as it is full of insight on how personalities are formed in childhood.!!!

The Ritual

P7l0DRP.jpg?1

The Awesome:

You get to see the monster. The monster looked cool as I had to pause to figure out what I was seeing.

The Good: Loved all the wooded locations. The cinematography helps in adding dread without necessarily showing anything. Hard to tell if they were CGI or actual locations at times. Sound design is brilliant.

The Bad: Seen formula films like this before. Think Evil Dead, The Descent, Blair Witch are all films i'd re-watch before this one, just because those other films creeped me out more.

The Ugly: Pay off at the end is a bit unsatisfying. Only one real haunting moment. The dream sequences end abruptly and I couldn't tell when we were back in the present. And I couldn't tell how the flashbacks tied in or how it made it significant. In The Descent, the flashbacks are useful in telling the backstory in a far way superior fashion.

yCKhMJ0.jpg?1

Verdict: 2.5/5.......just been here, done that and while somethings are a bit fresh, it wasn't not enough to keep me from the woods. I'd still go hiking after watching it. I enjoyed the journey through the woods but the third act really threw in a Wicker Man element that wasn't needed and while not a total failure, it gets cartoonish.

I watched King Author:Legend of the Sword. DVR'd it from free HBO preview

What a waste of time!  I was apprehensive of Charlie Hunnam as the lead role. At times I thought I was watching "Jax Teller" from Sons of Anarchy!

I think the opening scene may have set my attitude for the entire movie. In that scene there were these War Elephants. These weren't the War Elephants of Xerxes in the movie 300. The elephants in 300 were huge, but in the realistic realm. These elephants were at least 20 times the size the 300 elephants.....and that's a conservative estimate!

This movie couldn't make up it's mind on what era it takes place! From scenery to vernacular used to scenes far too reminiscence of Nazi Germany rallys, the director's "vision" must have been thru bloodshot eyes under the influence of medical sticky icky herbage. I found it very difficult to watch this  2 hour long movie. I think the only reason to continue watching was to see what other level stupidity the director would show me.

I think Rotten Tomatoe's review of 1 1/2 stars is quite generous! What a waste of $175 million USD !!!!!

LMAO! I guess I'm a glutton for punishment! I have a friend that will watch it solely for Charlie Hunnam because she has a "thing" for him.

Kind of why I've watched most of anything Kate Beckinsale has ever been in. Joking. I think she is an awesome actress that happens to be gorgeous.

I thought it was a cool idea, but poorly executed. I can see where someone that is fascinated by orcs, elves and fairies  would be enamored by it though.

There's a reason it was released in very limited theaters and released on Netflix the same day.

I still enjoyed it for the most part.

Black Panther

I thought it was an excellent movie. I felt that it balanced its obligations as a 'superhero movie' with some thought provoking themes that it managed to handle very well. Visuals, sound design, story, and acting all held up. I would recommend it.

And the Dora Milaje were kick-arse. Probably one of the best portrayals of warriors who happen to be women that I've seen. A lot has been made about how the movie handles black and African themes, but it also handles gender themes pretty well too. Namely by just letting cool people do cool things in cool settings. I wish I could have had this movie growing up.

Dogma

This film is nearly 19 years old, but I was recommended this film when I had some free time. It isn't the best film I've ever seen in my entire life, but it's really hilarious and stupid. A great choice if you're bored and you don't know what to do.

Great movie if you don't subscribe to religion. I remember the religious folks coming out and being outraged the movie was made. They tried to ban it. I should watch it since when I saw it, i was subscribing to religion at the time and today might have more to teach me.

+1

The funniest thing about this particular signature is that by the time you realise it doesn't say anything it's to late to stop reading it.

I read about that. It surprised me, it's just black humor, but I guess circumstances weren't the same those days.

People felt it was blasphemous but we shouldn't all be expected to subscribe to a God concept.

You're right, but maybe people didn't have the concept of freedom that we have nowadays. So, who determines what's wrong or what's right? Jeez this is turning philosophical xD
