A Serbian Film

I could have happily lived my entire life without seeing the image of a newborn infant, fresh from the womb, being brutally raped, crying in fear, pain and confusion, while her mother lies there watching and smiling.

Then I watched A Serbian Film.

0/10 never watch this film.  Never talk about this film.  I will try to forget this film.

Dammit. Now I have to watch it later. But first Crimson River.

I thought this was a video nasty from the 80's but its a 2010 film...I want to see how the controversial elements were shot and how convincing. Curiosity...unfortunately the copy I found has no subtitles so Im not sure If I can watch it without at least knowing what they are talking about.

They were shot with gruesome and explicit detail.  Even the baby rape.  The bit where he decapitates a woman while raping her.  The bit where teeth are knocked out and a woman is choked to death with a penis.  The bit where he rapes his own six year old son.  There's nothing artistic about it, it's basically a snuff film with a budget.

Bird Box (2018)

Sandra Bullock and Trevante Rhodes in Bird Box (2018)

The Awesome: The tense moments were done well, especially the third act's forest scene, all the elements were there, from the setting, lighting, dialogue, and acting. The film does something that one of my fave films of the genre also does well, i'm talking about 2017's The Mist, in both these films you have to use your imagination as nothing is explained to why strange things begin happening with the population. The brief moments of explanations come from character theories which give hints but nothing is ever confirmed as to why things began happening in the first place. Waiting for that reveal really went a long way into me excusing some of the moments I found ridiculous and ludicrous. I loved the theory Charlie (Rel Howry) gives us about world religion and mythology being the reason for the end of the world scenario going on around them. Having that theory in mind really helped me come up with my own conclusion of the ending and essentially saved what should be a film I would have destroyed thanks to it's plot holes, illogical moments, and confusing story elements. There is a moment where Malorie (Sandra Bullock) arrives at an abandoned place and takes some blankets from a bed, to much of my surprise when she picks up the blanket, we see dust come off it, and I was impressed by such attention to detail, just wish some of the film's more important scenes would have been treated with the same care and attention.

Bird Box (2018)

The Good: Sandra Bullock is doing her Sandra thing again and she helped me stick with her and follow the film to the end because of her performance. She saves some clunky group dialogue scenes and is the only one that comes across as taking the story seriously. I thought the pacing was decent as the use of flashbacks blends well into the present. The kid actors were very good and is why I felt the scenes with them in them were some of the best. I liked the subtle hints in the film like how Malorie is always wearing something blue to remind us of the cold and how it goes with her frigid personality. Also the subtle hints in the paintings that Malorie has in the house. Some of the suicides looked real good and some were haunting. Although we don't see the entities, at least that aspect of the film was done much better than just the leaves blowing around in way less entertaining, "The Happening" did. Being led to believe one of the children would have to be sacrificed in order for everyone else to live was depressing but controversially thrilling.

Sandra Bullock, Trevante Rhodes, Julian Edwards, and Vivien Lyra Blair in Bird Box (2018)

The Bad: My wife watches a TV show called "The Village" and you know you are watching a TV show and not a movie by the way that show is shot, the first half of Bird Box looks like a made-for-TV series episode, I didn't feel like I was watching a movie until about halfway where I felt the cinematography changes and feels more cinematic. The script seems like a combo of improv lines and written ones in many places, especially the group scenes, thankfully Sandra takes control of those scenes. I get that the things that have happened are traumatic for Malorie but for her not to give her own child a name is so fucking dumb, had she at least named the boy and not the girl, it could have added even more value to the scenes where she is telling them one of them will have to "look" when they get to a certain area in the river. Seeing Felix (Machine Gun Kelly) and Lucy (Rosa Salazar) decide to leave was one of the dumbest things because it was clear staying together made the most sense and was the moment that made me realize that the film just had too many characters that added NOTHING to the story, like Cheryl (Jackie Weaver) what was her purpose in the film? Her exposition could have been given to another character instead. Why show us all these characters that don't mean shit and let's be honest, once we know what the present-time situation is for the characters, we lose all suspense as to which characters would live and became more about how did they die, making their sacrifices meaningless and by the time more important characters are in danger, I had lost interest and just wanted to see the monsters. The film jumps ahead to a five-year period but the writer's forgot to consider what that really meant. The story structure seemed a little off and while I did like the flashback elements, there was something off about the way it was shown, perhaps it was losing the element of surprise to which characters would survive, once it is revealed that the story is jumping from past to present. I don't know if it was editing but some scenes made it feel like we were in different time periods, what I'm trying to say is, I wasn't sure how much time had passed between some scenes and only once are we shown a clear sense of passage in time but it only adds questions like, how have they fed themselves and how is that possible unless they were the only survivors but then that thought is immediately challenged by the fact that wouldn't all the food been taken by the "crazies that could stare at the monsters and live" since they didn't have to worry about blindfolds and death? What about electricity or running water? Clothes should all have been filthy by year five. Were they washing their clothes in rivers blindfolded? The death of Greg (B.D. Wong), I mean, I get why they tied him down so he could watch the surveillance cameras but why would everyone leave the room in the first place? wouldn't it have been a good idea to watch him and try and prevent his suicide in case their suspicions were true about whether the entities could affect you through media. Instead they leave Greg and go downstairs as if they have other things to do only to run into the room once they think something is wrong. Why couldn't someone stay with him on the other side of the monitors and be able to unplug them in case of an emergency.

Sarah Paulson in Bird Box (2018)

The Ugly: The film had so much potential and could have been immensely enriched by just a few tweaks and clarification of ideas, using characters to actually show progress and survival techniques leading to better payoffs. So many missed opportunities to reveal character motivations and secrets better, like...

Gary (Tom Hollander) imagine that somehow we had seen a piece of garment under his clothes that would have revealed more about his motivations. Imagine if we would have seen he had his Mental Institution clothing under his suit, that would have told us he was an escaped mental patient the entire time and would have mad his character twist reveal more impactful and sensical.

There was exposition that seemed out of place, like when the kids are being shown echolocation with the stones, you would think these kids would have grown up with these survival skills and would not need training at their age...it's called adaptation and I felt that this element was done far more superior in "A Quiet Place". Another thing that wasn't clear was how the evil entities affected the innocent like toddlers, were toddlers also committing suicide or where they exempt because of their innocence? People with down syndrome and other neurological disabilities, how were they affected?? And I really wanted some explanation about the adults that could see the entities and not die and instead seem to have been working for the entities as recruiters. Now I know one can say, the entities or monsters used the humans to enter the homes they could not enter....but that leaves to a bigger question, why couldn't the entities enter homes when it seemed they were shadow like and had no real solid form...how could they not enter through cracks in the doors and cause all that apocalyptic chaos and not have the ability to enter homes...i mean they show us they posses the ability to manipulate winds and we all know winds create Hurricanes and Tornadoes so why could they not use this power to break down windows or doors, don't even show the strong winds if you are going to forget what a force of nature they can be. The row boat ride in the final act gets really absurd once they hit the rapids because for fuck's sake, if you felt Sandra was lucky in "Gravity" then you might find it worse in this film as going down rapids is scary and dangerous enough without being blindfolded and having to watch two kids and birds in a box. Yes, while I loved the birds not being abandoned or left in a cage to starve to death, I felt that carrying one of the most delicate animal species in a shoe box and having them survive the entire ordeal of not just the river ride but the entire film timeline was unrealistic made even more so by the silence of the birds....have these filmmakers ever been around birds in distress ever??? that entire bird box element was ridiculous as were the two events of the rapids. The lack of explanation about the humans that seem to be recruited by the entities is so muddled and confusing...what gives them the ability to see the entities and not only survive but then go around forcing survivors to open their eyes and look at the beauty of the entities. Is it because these people have dark hearts or is it a mental health issue or just a selected few to help the entities, what is the qualification to be able to co-exist with the entities? This is never explained or touched upon and it left me frustrated. More frustrating than that is the idea that you can drive your car using the GPS without being able to look out the windows during an apocalyptic scenario and you will not hit abandoned cars even if we have seen the chaos on the streets beforehand...and why was Tom (Trevante Rhodes) the one trying to figure out the supermarket layout when Charlie is the one that WORKS in that same supermarket, they show Tom blindfolded feeling for the blinds when Charlie should have been the one with knowledge of the store! But just that scene in general is so fucking dumb because...

the situation becomes a 5v1 and they even have a shotgun.... and the writers still felt that the best way to write the scene out is to have Charlie sacrifice his life for these strangers when there were other options like...how about all 5 of them pushing the door closed instead of just Tom and Lucy pushing the door with Douglas (John Malkovich) standing there like a useless asshole while holding a fucking shotgun!! All the scene does is kill off one of the more meaningful characters in a story full of useless characters. Had it been just Charlie and a pregnant Malorie say in the basement of the supermarket and they had found themselves in that situation and that was the only way Charlie could save Malorie, then I would have been sold on his sacrifice.

MV5BMTYxNzk5NDQ3NF5BMl5BanBnXkFtZTgwOTU0ODQxNzM@._V1_SX1777_CR0,0,1777,889_AL_.jpg

Final Verdict...4/5...crazy right. I know you must be thinking that from what I wrote above, this movie doesn't deserve anything past a 2/5 from me but here is where the it gets crazy...from the very start of the chaos I assumed the thing bringing the apocalypse was an alien invasion or lab creatures that escaped. But Charlie mentions about the demons from around the world, so I kept that in the back of my mind...what if someone opened some kind of Pandora's Box and set the demons free, that would be cool, but I wasn't in the mood to think and just wanted to watch how our blindfolded protagonists were going to survive the river. By the time we get to the forest separation scene I wasn't impressed with the film at all. My thoughts were, is this it? was this just a survival movie [and she doesn't even sacrifice one of the children like I thought she was going to have to...i mean, I really thought she was going to sacrifice the girl since technically she wasn't her daughter]. So I was pretty let down and then they arrive at Janet Tucker School of the Blind and BOOM just like that my own theory materializes in front of me...still having in the back of my mind, Charlie's theory about demons being released to the world it dawned on me that what we are seeing is an Act of God...God sends these creatures to destroy the "ungrateful". and which group of humans do you think is the most ungrateful on Earth? probably us, the able bodied, us that have all our senses intact but complain about everything; we complain about not getting a parking spot closer to the store entrance, hate having to stand in line, hate exercising,  don't take care of our bodies, meanwhile those with broken bodies or illness must look at us and wish they could be us. When I translated the movie like that, it changed for me, the attack made sense, what if this is how God would remove humans from the planet...his judgement would come in the form of creatures that force you into suicide. The blind aren’t affected not because they lack sight but because in my theory, they are not going to be ungrateful. Of course then you have to consider the bad guys that don't die when they see the creatures, the way I saw them was that God allows the creatures to control a few humans to help them find survivors that are hiding underground or in places the creatures are not allowed to enter as we see throughout the film their inability to enter homes or buildings. I felt convicted by this train of thought, am I ungrateful? Do i take my eyesight for granted? Do i take my health for granted? My life? These thoughts left me numb as I didn't expect to find that type of self reflection from this film. Anyways that is how my brain tied up the whole story and I dont know if that is what the filmmakers intended but credit to them for allowing me to translate their material like that.

Upcoming reviews: The Crimson Rivers, A Serbian Film, Pet Sematary (2019), and Unfriended: Dark Web.

Really? Not a film I've ever seen but it's been mentioned many times when the subject turns to dark films that shouldn't be watched, apparently it makes the Human Centipede look tame. That will be an interesting review.

Yeah it will be an interesting review to say the least and like my review of "The House That Jack Built" I will try and explain why I felt ASF had some merit in the storytelling and other aspects besides the reasons these types of films get recognized for.  While a lot of what they show in ASF really has no purpose to be made or shown, I think there was a real creepy story that justifies a lot of the actions of the protagonist and is why it probably did not need the extremely disturbing elements. I just have to post my thoughts on The Crimson Rivers first since that was part of the Film Club assignment and then I will get to ASF, as I'm not sure how I'm going to handle the real fucked up inhuman shit in that film.

It’s the best film I’ve ever seen that features “newborn porn”.

It doesn't feature it. lol. There is a scene that simulates it which wasn't needed and really was a very low point even for this extreme genre. Knowing it was fake was the only way I would have been able to sit through it otherwise and thankfully it isn't a multiple angle scene.

The reason I want to review it has nothing to do with the shock and disgust factor but with what I felt was a good skeletal idea in the story that sadly was used in a film filled with scenes of poor taste. Plus there were moments that made me laugh at the absurdity of what was on screen.

Spider-Man: Far From Home

Just saw it and it was a good movie. Tough job to come after Avengers: Endgame but this new Spider-Man tells a more grounded story, with smaller stakes but does it well.

I liked that what we saw in the trailers were only part of the first and second act and don't ruin the ending at all. Marvel Studios are really good at that and I love it. They respect the fans.

It's a good enough movie. Nothing particular stands out, great action sequences. The villain is quite interesting and I want to see more of him. Sure, some things are expected if you know a bit about the comics but it's still definitely enjoyable.

Even if it closes the Infinity Saga and the 3 phases of the MCU, it still advances the Universe narrative and sets up things to come, especially for Spider-Man and Nick Fury.

Now, this is the first time we don't know what's to come from Marvel. I mean nothing official cause we all know a few movies are coming out in the years to come.

Comic Con next week will hopefuly reveal all. HYPE !!!

@Fido_le_muet what did you think of the Marvel panel?  I love how weird it all sounds, and some of the subtitles are awesome, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness!  Thor: Love and Thunder!

Also, motherfucking Blade!

It was... AMAZING !!!

Here's a recap of how it unfolded from my POV.

I sorta knew already that these movies were on the horizon in the near future cause I follow everything from Marvel Studios very closely, reading news everyday.

My expectations for these movies were a bit low because honestly, I didn't care much about that Shang-Chi guy who's an expert in martial arts or about Black Widow. We already know how her story ends. She's cool and all but she's no Thor or Captain Marvel. I was a bit intrigued by the Eternals though. Can Marvel do the same thing they did with the Guadrians of the Galaxy ? I hope so ! Dr Strange 2 was expected, it's been known for almost a year now. Thor 4 came up fairly recently, probably because of the character success since Ragnarok. He's definitely the major player now that Stark and Cap are no more.

I was still anticipating SDCC for some casts reveal and maybe a few artworks or a Black Widow trailer and maybe a surprise.

I kinda got was I was expecting but also MORE !!! And I loved what I got !

Black Widow : people in San Diego got a trailer. That was expected. They revealed a few more cast members and confirmed the vilain (Taskmaster, obscure guy, doesn't seem very interesting for now). At least we'll get to know what happened in Budapest. Probably not very interesting but we've been hearing about it since 2012 so.

The Eternals : full cast was revealed. We knew about almost half of them before but that was confirmation ^^ Also got a cool artwork of Celestials after the Con. Neat little surprise. Tells us they're gonna have a bigger role in this movie (we've seen 1.5 of them in Guardians before) . No look at the characters tought but I'm still intrigued.

Shang-Chi. Wasn't very interested about him at first. Feels like a cheaper Iron Fist and I would have preferred an Iron Fist movie. But at Comic Con we got the subtitle and it changes everything ! HYPE ! The Ten rings. That means the Mandarin ! Finally the real Mandarin ! I loved Trevor but the real Mandarin guys ! Hope he's awesome and ruthless ! Now I am very interested in this movie, and it opens the door to secondary Iron Man characters to show up since the Mandarin is an Iron Man vilain mainly. Maybe we'll see Rhodey and maybe we'll see Tony's girl become Iron Heart ! She's still very young but it's exciting !

Doctor Strange 2 : Knew it was coming and I'm expecting Mordo to be the vilain. Don't know what else to expect. Should be a pretty straightforward story. That was before THE MULTIVERSE OF MADNESS !!! The fucking multiverse people ! OF MADNESS !!! I'm still expecting Mordo to have a role in that but it will be so much more ! It's gonna be a wild ride ! The multiverse ! This is it ! After the tease in Spider-Man, it was obvious it would come eventually. I'm sure that's how they're gonna bring the X-Men and the Fantastic Four into the MCU. And we've heard that Scarlet Witch will have a supporting role following the events of the WandaVision TV show. BAM ! Another big news, the TV shows will have the same impact on the movies as the movies themselves. They will be fully integrated in the MCU. I already loved Agents of SHIELD and the Netflix shows but this is the cherry on top. Wonderful news. That's probably my most anticipated Phase 4 movie. And apparently it's gonna be a horror movie @Con !

Thor 4. Love and Thunder. That is so cheesy ! Found the tile so lame at first but now I find it hilarious and totally on par with Waititi's style. This is gonna be great. Plus Nathalie Portman is back. AS THOR ! She's gonna be the Mighty Thor ! That is so cool ! I'm just wondering what Hemsworth's Thor is gonne be up to in the movie lol. Perfecting his Fortnite skills maybe. Or messing with Star Lord in the Asguardians of the Galaxy's ship ? That would be way too much fun ^^ And maybe Loki will show up again now that his 2012 self is out there. We'll see where his TV show will take us but I wouldn't be surprised if he ends up inbetween 2 Thors. Also Valkyrie will be heavily featured and that should be a lot of fun since it's been confirmed that she's bisexual. Lots of fun interactions between her and Man Thor.

Very excited about all of this. And then there's the TV shows ! Falcon and the Winter Soldier with Baron Zemo ! Loki wrecking havoc in the timeline ! WandaVision despite Vision being dead. How ? Hawkeye training his sidekick (bye bye Jeremy Renner). Don't really care about the What If animated thing. Unless it is MULTIVERSE related !

That only is awesome !

But after that they announced BLADE with Mahershala Ali ! Love that guy ! Okay, I don't really care about Blade and him chasing vampires or whatever. Not very interested in that but I trust Marvel Studios will win me over again by implementing him perfectly into the MCU.

Oh and also, they announced that the Fantastic Four were coming soon ! FINALLY ! The X-Men can't be very far either. Oh and they already mentionned a few movies from Phase 5 : Black Panther 2 (obviosuly), Captain Marvel 2 (obviously), Blade, Guardians of the Galaxy 3 (YES !) and probably Spider-Man 3.

I'm so hyped ! Gonna be a long wait before Black Widow !

Got carried away, as always when somebody mentions the MCU :D

It’s Doctor Strange so it’ll probably be some Lovecraft style cosmic horror.

So I went to the Cinema with my 7yold daughter yesterday to watch the Lion King and I have some remarks about it.

First of all: the cinematic experience is amazing, the models are amazing, the photography (if you can call it that) is astonishing, it is fantastically well done.

But (and keep in mind that I watched the Portuguese version, not the original), the musics are worse, the Portuguese voices are far worse and the general feeling I felt for the movie was completely lost with the changes! They changed lyrics, they changed entire lines and scenes, they just did a poor job in adapting it! And the voice acting was far worse also! pitty...

Even my daughter complained that the voices from the original were far better than from this one!

Four Lions.

Seen it twice now, but only the second time did I appreciate just how sensitive the subject is and how well the film comes across.

I think this is an underrated film with a great narrative, while also being quite thought provoking and ridiculously funny when it needs to be.

7/10.

On mobile so just some quick one liners on the films I watched last night at work.

The Shape of Water

Beautiful, unconventional love story between a mute cleaner and a fish man.  Gorgeous cinematography, Del Toro’s best film.

9/10

The King of Comedy

One of my all time favourite films, it’s basically Taxi Driver, if Travis Bickle wanted to be a comedian.  It’s also a huge inspiration for the upcoming Joker film, which looks amazing.

10/10

The Killing of a Sacred Deer

Tense, dark thriller about a family pushed to the edge by a sinister teenager.  From the director of The Lobster and The Favourite, it has that same detached quality about it, but at times becomes creepily intimate.  A real modern horror film.

I don’t normally rate the films as I watch them but the last one I saw definitely inspired me to write something.

Robin Hood (2018)

I do love a good film based around one of Yorkshire’s most famous folk heroes so when I saw this on Netflix I thought I’d give it a go.

Big mistake. I though Russell Crowes effort was a poor attempt at Robin Hood but this one makes that one look like a masterpiece.

I won’t get into historical accuracy as it’s easily a zero. I can see what they were trying to do by giving it a modern feel but they should have really gone the full hog and actually set it in the 21st century. A Robin Hood film in the style of Lock Stock or Snatch with the same cast could have worked. Whatever this was trying to be failed miserably.

Watched this the other night.

I'll admit it : I'm a Pokefan :D Played a couple games when I was a kid/teen and went back to it with the release of Pokemon Go. I still play that game everyday. So naturally, I had to watch this movie (haven't seen any of the anime movies).

It was entertaining. Obviously not film of the year but for a Pokemon afficionado, it was very good. The plot is pretty simple but it's definitely aimed at young adults like me who grew up with the first games. Kids can watch it too but there are some dark moments that may scare them.

Anyways, I loved how the Pokemon looked. They were very convincing alongside real people, especially in the city. On smaller sets, you can sometimes tell the actor are talking alone before the creatures are added digitally. Still, very well made world where Pokemon and humans live side by side. You could almost believe it's real.

Ryan Reynolds mo-cap performance as Pikachu is very good. He's a crappy Green Lantern but he's a convincing Pokemon ! :D

Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019) - 3/5 - Great looking monsters and appreciated getting to see them a lot. A better story for the humans we follow could have elevated this to something really special. Had I seen this at age 14, I would have loved it....being much older, I needed more than just the cool monsters in repetitive fighting scenes to recommend this to adults, especially adults that are not Godzilla fans. My grade is as high because honestly, its the only modern Godzilla film i would watch again on a rainy day. Why should you watch it?  Godzilla and the monsters look amazing!

Rocketman (2019) - 2/5 - Don't get me wrong, I know that Elton John is a fucking legend and learning about stuff in his life was fun but as you may already know, Im not a big fan of musicals and I only know his songs from my childhood as they were always on the radio, so I found it too musically and predictable. I did think the actors did a decent job but I think I enjoyed Bohemian Rhapsody more and  even that was full of strange editing. Why should you watch it? The costumes and evolution of Elton's signature looks and according to the film, how certain incidents created certain songs, i think.

Nightmare Cinema (2018) - 2/5 - Was excited to watch this as I love a good anthology, Creepshow being one of my all time faves, and there are some strong efforts by the filmmakers of the four stories, some had  real interesting aspects that I had never seen before, like a slasher who is not a slasher, and a story of a mother who is going crazy and the subtle changes to her surroundings come out of nowhere and figuring out what is happening was real cool, and shockingly there is one that takes place at religious boarding school and holy fuck does it get wild, children getting slaughtered by a priest, but its so over the top that its funny and i guess as long as you are fighting nazis or devils, you will not get slammed with censorship for high levels of violence against children. The entire anthology just doesnt deliver as the other stories just dont work as they become predictable and pointless not to mention we have seen those concepts in the past. So instead of watching this, in my opinion, you should watch the anthology 'Ghost Stories (2017)' as that one ties all the stories up to fit one cool ass narrative and also keeps you guessing to the very end. I reviewed it a few pages back but If you are really interested in watching Ghost Stories, read my review after you have watched it. Dont spoil anything. Skip Nightmare Cinema and watch Ghost Stories instead because tension, ambiance, and payoff are more rewarding in Ghost Stories. Why should you watch this? "This Way To Egress" is the best story and nothing really happens but you feel like you are going motherfucking crazy.

Watched this the other night. I'll admit it : I'm a Pokefan :D Played a couple games when I was a kid/teen and went back to it with the release of Pokemon Go. I still play that game everyday. So naturally, I had to watch this movie (haven't seen any of the anime movies).

It was entertaining....

Well thanks to you next time Im with kids and they want to watch a movie, guess what I'm suggesting, so thanks for the review!!
