GT6 racing meet - Tuesday, Sep 30th, 10pm GMT until.....

Oh just to add, GT6 online with the rules we use allows slight contact to be made, but in some instances where slight contact is made or a corner cut which benefits you - you will get a 3 second time penalty.

Also if you go down the inside of someone way too fast and are about to collide with another player, you'll become transparent like the non-contact feature in GTAO so you won't actually hit them.

Mot much contact is ever made which is really enough to wreck someone because the game mechanics will not allow it unless all rules are off.

I'll probably be online.

And yes the game itself handles all the "rules". All you need to do is race.

In the real world of motorsport, the responsibility lies on the person making the pass to do it cleanly, the person being passed has zero responsibility to give them room, let them by, slow down, whatever....just race.

I do not want GTA BS bleeding over into GT6 otherwise I will simply go race on my own. Done it for 15+ years, doesn't bother me a bit.

I dont see much point in manual transmissions in video games. You can't "feel" the powerband in the seat of your pants like you can in a real car to know when to shift instinctively, the game forces you to either watch the tachometer or wait until you hear the engine bounce off the rev-limiter, either case being a disadvantage to just letting the computer hit the shift points for you. The cases where the computer leaves you in too high a gear are few and far between to be racing with an eye on the tachometer IMHO. No one does that in real life. It's a great way to crash.

Cool, good to know about the contact rules. Sounds like the game really takes care of any suspicious situations.

It occasionaly feels like bumper cars when racing against computer though. Dunno, sometimes it feels like AI just hugs the racing line and doesnt really like to drive anywhere else even when you pass them.

And you probably dont need to worry about me hitting anyone anyway as I'll be driving behind you all. ;)

Heh, and I thought I was the only one using AT  I've been probably using that in almost all driving games I've played on PC, its not as much as not being able to tell when to shift but more to do with controlling everything with just your hands, accelerate/break/steer/shift, where in a real car you use your legs too and you can steer with just one hand too and use the other to shift. It's even more of an issue on a keyboard as its not as ergonomical as PS3 controller. I just can't do it. Might be able to with additional hand and better multitasking capabilities.

Actually can't wait for this tonight. Sounds really exciting stuff. :D

Btw, is there a sure way to tell which cars fit the "racing car" category? It doesnt always says in the description or I haven't found it yet. I'm assuming all cars with stickers and sponsors livery are definitely racing cars?

Trying to pick one as I'm sure I'll need it soon. Probably can't go wrong with one of the NIssan GT-Rs? Though I'm leaning towards one of the Audi R8s. Any other suggestions?

Don't worry ur not alone with using automatic transmission , I use it to cos as HC said I find it too much of a faff to know exactly which gear to downshift to on each braking zone the up shift is not too bad and I agree it's not really natural when u don't have pedals or an actual gear shifter, it's much easier on slower cars but once u get to the really fast cars it's much harder as the reaction time is less.

As to which racing cars to go for , if you go to the recommended section next to the dealership then it groups all of the cars into racing categories: ie gt300 , gt 500 , lmps etc so this is a really good way of narrowing down ur choice

Automatic changes gear slightly too early for me, I have nothing against it but I feel as though automatic makes me lose momentum due to that early shift.

I don't allow the revs to hit the limiter either.

I wasn't trying to spill GTA racing shit over to GT6, perhaps I was misunderstood, I just explained briefly to Z as he is yet to join an online lobby.

Yeah, thanks, I'm really glad you did. I was actually relieved as I didnt want any GTA issues either, so thanks for explaining how it works.

I'm sure theres loads more stuff to get to know about the game, especially the online lobby features, but I'll learn them along the way.

So, to get back on topic. Is it DC, HC, Rikster and me tonight? Anyone else joining us? :)

Most "Racecars" are explicitly labelled racecars...the only grey area really just applies to maybe a half dozen or so cars. We usually race street cars the whole time, the exception being the Mazda Roadster "Touring Car" which is a race car, and maybe we will do the "starter" Red Bull race car if everyone has one. I think I was the only person who didn't have one last time.

I dont host much racecar racing because the performance level for most racecars people own is so high that the races tend not to be much of a race. This is why I like the Mazdas for our little get togethers. They are fun to drive because they are a breeze to handle and they promote fairly tight racing....which is more fun for the competitive aspect as well as you get to refine your racing lines, driving skills/tactics, etc to make passes and/or score a win.

With that being said, yes you can't go wrong with a GTR as your first serious racecar....it is also good enough to be your last/only.

R8 is also a great choice too, mid-engine always has the upper-hand, but may require significant suspension tuning which can require a lot of trial & error to get to a point where the car is easy to handle when driving on the ragged edge of control & disaster. The 4wd of the R8 goes a long way to insulate you from this treachery of mid-engine car design.

Thanks guys for tonight. Much fun! Didnt really care I was way behind everyone, but I see I'll need to work on my cars and my driving to be more competitive.

I had my eye on that X-Bow for while now, looks like a very versatile vehicle, I just need to get gold on one more license challenge to get it as a gift. Just can't crack it somehow.

Oh and I thought the replays saved and exported to PS3 were of any use, turns out its just useless (encrypted) data and not actual videos :( , so can't post any replays from the losers perspective.

Will definitely snap some pictures of Smokey Dave when I get up though, hehe. Couldnt see anything behind him.

Great racing.

I had some fun battles with Zmurko too.

That Ford GT, I have nothing in that PP limit capable of keeping up with it, such a fast car that one.

Just competition rally cars or will a 4WD road car with dirt tyres also be allowed too?

Rally races take a LOT of practice to keep from riding the barriers the entire race.

Yeah that's true, I have done quite a few, car setup makes big differences too.

WRC-type rally cars.

Cheapest one i have seen is a Ford Escort for something like 200k

Got myself one of the Subaru Imprezas ('99) and tried some dirt racing today.

I thought it was time trials, just you and the track, but its actually racing with all the cars on the track at the same time. Most of the time you can't even see the track because of all the dirt clouds.

Of course I had to completely turn off almost all electronic aids before I could actually do some power sliding.

It's quite challenging, especially on narrow roads, but so much fun when you can get through the turn. :D

This is going to be a riot on Thursday.

  • 2 weeks later...

I probably won't be able to make it tonight. Just received the most wonderful news that I've become an uncle 30 mins ago for the 2nd time and I'll probably be celebrating a bit tonight. :D

Have fun!

Great news man.

I won't be racing tonight either, I don't have my racing console available.

I could download the game again for free but I will have no cars or cash.

I know it's strange to have separate consoles for different games but it's because my racing console has a broken blu-ray drive so it will only play DLC games, therefore I keep it set up to my wheel for when I had an F1 addiction but tonight it's not gonna be possible.

New update apparently coming next week.

Quick match option in online

New HUD elements

Awesome

So nice to play a game that isn't run by hacks and amateurs

Here goes charlie, it was nice knowing you ...

I would be up for it. What's the earliest we can actually do this? 10pm gmt?

Thursday is my day off, but it doesnt mean I wont be busy. Since it appears I am the only American in on this, just decide whatever time is best for you guys and if I can be online I will, if not I won't.
