Winter preperations

Just out of curiosity, what do you do or need to do to get you and yours ready for winter. Maybe something you post will remind someone else of something they need to do.

For me

Make sure snowblower and tractor have all fluids changed and will run

New tires on shop car.

All flashlights and emergency electronics have new batteries

week supply of food, water, medical, and kerosene

All out door animials have heated water systems working and shelter in good shape

Look the roof over

The funniest thing about this particular signature is that by the time you realise it doesn't say anything it's to late to stop reading it.

I have crappy old windows in my house so I have to draft-proof them.  I use that Saran Wrap like stuff, it's awesome.

Burlap wrapping for the ornamental trees & shrubs.

Ballast for the pickup truck.  Think I'm going to use a few bags of river-stone this year.  I used cinder blocks last year and they, of course, scratched up the bed.  :(

None of the above.

I could hope for less power cuts than last winter.

To be honest, I don't have any commitments that make me need to prepare for winter.

It will probably just rain the whole time and that's nothing new to me.

Put my car up for winter, get the old beater out and running for winter.

Clean out the gutters.

Clean the fireplace and the chimney.

Get the snow blower up and running.

New tires on the wife's car.

Get the Rose bushes covered.

Get ready for some long nights on the weekends in a tow truck. I operate a truck for my father in law on the weekends. I've had a break from it for a few weeks because of football season. That ends this coming weekend.

I think we have a similar climate.  It rains, rains, and rains here during the winter, and if it isn't raining, it is overcast, dark, or at least threatening to rain.  I don't mind it, but it does take its toll on certain people, and is known to cause seasonal depression.  I suppose, most here will be stocking on Vitamin D supplements since they will not get it from the Sun.

There isn't much that I have to do--take the air conditioners out of the windows and make sure the windows are closing properly.  It doesn't get that cold here, but we can probably look forward to seeing a little snow but nothing compared to how it is in the midwest or east.  We get ice here, and I will have to make sure the water pipes don't freeze when it drops below a certain temperature.

A new coat is definitely on my list too. :)

Coldest it's been here is -14C but generally only gets to as low as -10C.

Check the tyres have good tread left.  Fill the screenwash with undiluted stuff suitable down to -15C. Insulate the outside tap. Get the boiler serviced. Make sure we have plenty salt for the paths. Get the snow shovels to the front of the garage. Put the winter kit in the boot of the car, wellies, shovel, coats.  I live up a hill above the snowline so sometimes have to leave the car at the bottom and walk home, then walk back down to dig the car out in the morning!

That's about it really (none of which I have done yet!!)

From a few years back, probably not as bad as some parts of the world but we had to dig a path for the dog to go to the toilet!

Right now it's just fall so I'm in the middle of leaf raking season, it seems endless. Once the trees are completely bare I get on the roof with my leaf blower and make sure all the gutters are clear.

Unshed the snow blower, change oil and make sure its ready to go.

Air conditioners out of the windows - done.

Street bikes will get their tanks topped of and Stabil added then parked somewhere out of the way.

Dirt bike gets it's carb and tank completely drained. Once winter has settled in I do maintenance on them so they are ready for next season.

Put cover on pickup bed and add weight over rear axle.

Clear a spot in one of the garage sides to fit the car.

Put away patio furniture.

Check furnace - needs new filter

Change screens out on doors.

Tape windows.

Probably a bunch of other stuff I forgot.

All i have to do is put the mini orchard away in the poly tunnel ( We have peach, nectarine, plum, cherry, apple & pear trees), trim the bushes back while the birds are gone , winterize the pool and make sure my tyres on the 325ci are bald enough for some quality cornering capers. I will also try and avoid hitting walls this winter. :D

I might have to turn my heat on for a bit. I don't miss that white stuff that falls from the sky. It can stay in Illinois where I left it.

I will take all the snow you left behind. Winter is one of my favorite seasons.

It's all yours! It's funny, this is the first car I've owned that I didn't have summer tires on it, I actually bought all seasons this time around and I very much doubt I see any snow any time soon. We had snow out here a few years back and even with brand new summer tires on the GTO I had at the time, the car was damn near useless for those two days the snow stuck around. When I was growing up in Illinois my first car was a '91 Camaro, so I'm definitely no stranger to RWD shenanigans in snow.

I used to have to stock up on coal and make sure the oil tank was full for the boiler.

Now I live further south in Scotland I don't have to worry, snow tyres are ready for the car if I need them and I've done some tidying in the garden but that's it.

  • 2 weeks later...

Still have plenty of wood left from last winter. Tomorrow I will stock up on fuel for the central heating and later this month I'll have some winter tyres put on the car and that's about it.

Just discovered that the fuel/oil prices are currently rather low, so I'll have to spend far less then initally budgetted. Cool thing is that I now don't have to touch my savings to get the new PS4 :)

An international crisis and a slow economy do bring some benefits from time to time, it seems.

I'm in Canada, so have to get winter tires on my car, a bag of salt and a shovel for the trunk. :-)

For the hubby, CAA membership renewed since he travels 40 min to and from work daily. Also thinking about an emergency car kit... last year people were stuck on the highway for hours due to a wicked snow storm.

Would definitely do that Janice !

Got stuck myself in a snow storm for a few hours a couple of years ago and let's say it wasn't the most pleasant experience. Though I like snow a lot, I'm not going out anymore without a blanket and such when they predict heavy snow. The likelyhood of that happening over here is a lot smaller then in Canada of course, but I'm not taking chances anymore :)

I always take the following with me: medical kit (mandatory anyways), one of those gold/silver sheet blankets, a regular blanket, food and drinks, small shovel. Also should think about buying some chains cause even winter tyres are not going to cut it with those low profile tyres I currently have. Sliding around can be fun, but it's not the safest think to do in peak traffic :D

Shopping for snow tires today for the Jetta. Last winter I drove my pickup every time it was  supposed to snow but it gets poor mpg.

I always fill the trunk with extra clothes, water and my sleeping bag. Shovel is a good idea. You never know when you will get stuck.

Hmmmm, shovel, Las Vegas, desert, Casino's ... something tells me you're not talking about getting stuck with the car  ....

Maybe I watch too many movies :)
