How long have you been using forums?

With Facebook and Twitter and other social media outlets forums have lost a bit of there place (some say forums are dead but I disagree).

How long have you been using forums? How have you seen changes since the advent of FB?

I have been using forums for 10 years or so, the software is much more advanced now. I do notice with the exception of niche forums like this that more of the users seems to be older. I think it is because younger users tend to go f the FB route and not exploring the net.

The funniest thing about this particular signature is that by the time you realise it doesn't say anything it's to late to stop reading it.

I´ve been using and hosting / managing forums over 8-10 years by now. I´ve worked many forum softwares, incl. SMF, phpBB, iPBoard, vBulletin. vBulletin are the most easiest, safest board so far, its expensive too, bought vB full license almost €200 bout 3 years ago.

I'm more of a reader (in regards to forums), but I have experimented with a few here and there over the years.  This is the first one I have posted to on a regular basis.  I don't even have an account on gtaforums, but I read it daily.

I don't (and will never have) Facebook, Twitter, or anything of the like.  I did check out some of the chat rooms back in the day (Yahoo, Lycos, Excite), but overall, I'm not a social media person.  I barely even use my telephone.  And no, I'm not Amish; I'm just old fashioned in certain regards.

Forums as in traditional message boards, I'd say about 10 years as a reader, about 6-7 as a poster. I have 7000 posts in a Manchester United forum (though am not a United supporter, plenty of other football talk going on there) and have lurked a gambling forum (though posted little) for a long time, when I played online poker semi-professionally. I've quit that, now that the games became too though and only the top of the pile profits.

Arruda--very interesting, I too used to play semi-professional poker (both online and in Las Vegas).  I too have moved on, but I play the occasional $5.00 tournament on Sportsbook.ag every now and then.

I've only ever played it online, and when I mean semi-professional it was literally just better than a part-time job, which is to say about 2-3 hours per day multi-tabling 10$ and 25$ short-handed cash games. It allowed me to finance my studies for a couple of years, but I think taking a grinding approach prevented me from getting better and keep up with the average players. Nowadays it's too tight for me to exploit it.

Never experienced it live (except with friends of course) as Casinos in Portugal aren't too directed for that and charged exorbitant rates. Have never studied tournament poker. Would love to set some aside and have some fun in Vegas though, something to be done in the future when I start working and can afford it.

A shame GTA:O doesn't have Poker like RDR had, we could try a few games :)

Before GTAO I had only used forums for broadcasting my radio shows over the past 3 years.

The radio shows have dried up recently so I only use this forum, reading through GTAF is a waste of time unless narrow minded comments, non game related pictures and Google searched insults are your thing.

Yeah poker on GTAO would be awesome.

I don't want to go too off-topic here, so I'll limit myself, but it was the most stressful "job" I have ever had in my life.  To this day, I both love and hate the game at the same time.  Online play vs real life play is as different as night and day, but I got so burned out with both that I just up and quit for a long period of time.  However, I learned the game at a very young age, but eventually learned that it was no way for me to make a living.  It's kind of sad though because I used to love it; now I just find it too stressful.

Edit: @DavidCore - I agree about gtaforums, but every now and then there is a useful topic.  However, that seems to be a very hostile (and mostly immature) community overall.  I just go there for small bits of information, and see if there are any problems that I need to know about.

If you consider facebook and twitter to be a type of forums I have been using them for about 5-6 years, otherwise I have not been using forums for that long, maybe a few years!...

Also on an off topic in this topic -- cant wait for World Cup this summer!

vB was the standard, they botched it all up with vB 4 though. IPB is well ahead at this point in terms of quality and customer service. phpBB and SMF are so far behind in development. Have you tried a Xenforo board yet? I had an XF for about 4 days and sold the license.

I have been using forums for about 13 years, back in the day there was a game, not many of you may know it .... counterstrike... loved it, LOVED IT, LIVED IT, BREATHED IT. We used meet on forums before venturing out to public servers. Then we had a clan and ran our own server and our own forums. Good fun, still keep in touch with many of the people all these years later.

I know nothing about the troubles of hosting one, but as a user of a forum that recently switched from vB to Xenforo I'm loving it. I think it's working pretty well and they managed to add a lot of good stuff that was absent in the former.
